Week 11: COMPLAINING

  • Browse the Net and find out charts where phrasal verbs are illustrated and upload one of them to your blog. Add more phrasal verbs from the same family.
To start with I must honestly say that I have been looking for a long while some chart which could provide us with some phrasal verbs related to the world of complaints, but I haven't found anything. The only thing I've been capable of finding is some synonyms of the verb to complain. Thus, here they are:

Apart from this, I have been surfing the net in order to get some complaint texts, specifically in this case, a complaint letter for a faculty. I will write down it here and after that, different expressions to complain that appear in this text will be underlined in order to point out them. And here it is!

" Dear Sir or Madam:
I wish to express my dissatisfaction with the above iron, which I purchased from The Electrical Store in Newtown on 10 October, 2015. On using it for the first time, I found that the temperature control was faulty; it was not possible to set it for any temperature apart from the highest, for cotton. When I attempted to return the iron to the store, the cashier said that the store was unable to replace it or offer me a refund but advised me that it could be sent away for repair. As I need an iron on a daily basis, and it was not clear how long a repair would take, this option was unsatisfactory. As the iron clearly does not function as it should and therefore does not comply with the legal standards of product quality, I am writing to you to ask for a full refund of the £35.99 retail price. I look forward to hearing from you within the next two weeks.

Yours truly,

Jenny Hawkins"

Not too many expressions are precisely found in this text, however, it is a very good example of a complaint letter. I hope this is useful for anyone who read it.

As a final point, I will tell you all what I have been doing along this week to improve my English. This case has been different as I haven't done just one thing, but I have taken several actions in order to improve my English. It could be said that a combination of all my strategies have been made this week. That is to say, I've been reading a book in English, meanwhile I watched series, I did so in V.O (i.e. English). Moreover, the Lengua Inglesa exam is approaching so I have started studying for it and practising with C1 Cambridge exams. I consciously think this has been such a profitable week!

Bye-bye!
